The popular Levette Lake Recreation Site is back open.

The site north of Squamish was temporarily closed earlier this summer “to ensure public safety due to bear activity in the area,” according to a spokesperson for the B.C. Ministry of Environment and Parks on Aug. 18.

With the site reopened, the Conservation Officer Service is monitoring the bear situation.

The ministry spokesperson stressed that visitors are required to securely store all attractants, such as garbage and food, to help prevent bears and other wildlife from accessing them.

The closure earlier this summer was not unique; closures due to a bear have been common going back off-and-on to 2014.

The Levette Lake campground is operated by the not for profit charity Evans Lake Forest Education Society and boasts nine campsites at  $18 per night.

Potential visitors should note that getting to the lake requires driving on a very rough road. The ministry website recommends that drivers of 4x4s only travel the final stretch of road to the site.

Bear conflicts and aggressive bear behaviour can be reported to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277.

Conservation officers will respond as necessary to ensure public safety, the ministry spokesperson said.
