The life of a Britannia Beach resident was lost Monday night when a van and a car collided one kilometre south of Murrin Park on Hwy. 99.

Light rain was falling from low clouds and it as a dark night, police said.

A red minivan with three people in it was travelling northbound while a blue compact car with just one person in it was southbound. The two vehicles collided at about 10:45 p.m. at a section of highway where there is three lanes, two northbound lanes and one southbound lane.

Cpl. Jim Griffin said the role speed played in the crash is under investigation by the RCMP. The B.C. Coroner Service is also investigating. Cpl. Dave Ritchie said there was no indication that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Ritchie said the 42-year-old driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We are not releasing the name at this time," he added. "All the people involved are residents of the Squamish and Britannia area."

The three people in the van were initially taken to Squamish General Hospital and then transferred to Lower Mainland facilities.

Griffin said that one was taken to Lions Gate Hospital, another was taken to Vancouver General and the RCMP members did not know which hospital the third survivor went to.

The death is the tenth related to accidents this year on the southern portion of Hwy. 99.
