A massive rock is in the middle of Pavilion Park on Cleveland Avenue, but don’t worry, it didn’t fall from the Stawamus Chief.
It’s a new climbing boulder that resulted from a collaboration between the district, local climbers, the Climbers’ Access Society of B.C. and Andrew Coffey, owner of The Hive Bouldering Gyms.
The all-weather, custom-built boulder is made out of sculpted concrete and has a variety of handholds, footholds and features for climbers of all ages and skill levels.
The aim of the structure is to increase participation and interest in rock climbing, according to the district.
“This is a really exciting addition to downtown Squamish and yet another example of a project that would not have been possible without the generosity of donations and partnerships,” Mayor Patricia Heintzman said in a district news release.
“It’s always amazing to see what can happen when community-minded people take initiative.”
Coffey’s $30,000 donation was added to the district’s $40,000 set aside for the project in June.
