Briefs

Two separate groups of people were caught by surprise in the Elfin Lakes area of Garibaldi Provincial Park last weekend.A man and a woman from Surrey were camping in the park with their adult son and his girlfriend. Cpl. Dave Ritchie of the Squamish RCMP said a woman from Vancouver and a woman from Surrey were also in the park.

Both groups filed trip plans with relatives and the relatives called the RCMP Monday (March 21) to file missing persons reports. Ritchie said the Squamish Emergency Program, a police dog team and a helicopter company were called to help locate the missing people.

Search and Rescue Manager Murray Watt said the two separate parties went into the park on Friday (Mar. 19) intending to stay just one night at Elfin Lakes.

According to Ritchie the two vehicles belonging to the missing people were found Monday covered by snow in the Diamond Head parking lot.

Watt said 10 search and rescue volunteers set out to look for the six missing people.

A helicopter located the missing people in the Red Heather area. He said they made a snow cave Sunday night.

The two groups decided to wait out the storm at the Elfin Lakes Hut, said Watt. All six hiked on their own in the thigh deep snow to their vehicles.
