Const. Wael Audi, an RCMP officer from Ontario who died while on highway patrol near Squamish in 2002, was posthumously awarded a RCMP Memorial Mementos medal.

Last month, Audi's father, mother and older sister were presented with RCMP Memorial Mementoes in recognition of Audi’s service.

Wael, 29, was on patrol on March 29, 2002 when a charter passenger bus on Highway 99 struck his unmarked police car and killed him, according to the Officer Down Memorial website.

Staff Sgt. Brian Cumming, who did not know Audi but attended his memorial, said Audi founded an annual memorial youth volleyball tournament in Squamish for another officer who was killed, and he also taught the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program at Mamquam Elementary School.

“He was all about kids and keeping them busy,” said Cumming.
