Death from crash
A woman died and another is in hospital with serious injuries following a Highway 99 crash on Sunday, Nov. 1, police said. Marie-Pier Champagne, 32, of Whistler died as a result of the crash.
According to the BC Coroners Service, Champagne was a passenger in a northbound vehicle, which was in a head-on collision with a southbound vehicle and overturned on the highway near Lions Bay just before 5 p.m. She was taken to Lions Gate Hospital but died from her injuries on Nov. 3.
The coroner and the RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service continue to investigate the death. The highway was restricted to single lane-alternating traffic for several hours Sunday while authorities investigated the cause of the crash.
Stolen truck impounded
A stolen vehicle was impounded Tuesday, Oct. 27 after police received a report of a Ford F250 crashed into a fence in the 38000 block of Logger’s Lane. The truck was found empty, with the engine running and keys in the ignition. The truck was impounded and later reported stolen by its owner.
The theft of the vehicle and the crash are still under investigation, police said.
Car fire
A 1999 VW Passat was destroyed in a fire on Bailey Avenue near the CN rail tracks on Thursday, Oct. 29, police said. Squamish Fire Rescue put out the fire and police confirmed the car was not occupied. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Shannon Falls theft
A handbag containing credit cards and identification cards was stolen from the trunk of a rental vehicle parked in the Shannon Falls parking lot on Friday, Oct. 30, while the occupants were visiting the falls, according to Squamish RCMP.
Highway crashes
Three separate single vehicle crashes were reported in the Lions Bay area on the Sea to Sky Highway on Monday, Oct. 26, police said. No one was injured in any of these crashes, but all were believed to be related to poor driving conditions and speed, according to Squamish RCMP. With the onset of winter driving conditions, police are reminding drivers to focus on safe driving and respect the posted speeds.
