Illegal Camping

The District of Squamish bylaw department requested the RCMP attend the Mamquam Service Forest Road on Aug. 8 to put eviction notices on campers illegally camping on district land along the Stawamas River. There were 16 tents being used by campers from outside the district who were primarily here to rock climb. The campers agreed to leave and were provided with a list of authorized campgrounds in the area. Throughout the summer, Squamish bylaw officers have been actively pursuing this issue and have partnered with Squamish Fire Rescue, conservation officers and the RCMP to limit the impact of illegal camping to the land and resources.

Graffiti at HSS

On the evening of Aug. 8, security reported graffiti at Howe Sound Secondary on Buckley Avenue. Police arrived and photographed the evidence. This graffiti was fresh and read, “HAIL Satan 666,” while another said, “Get a life!” Security contacted the school district to initiate the removal of this graffiti before the start of the school year.

Theft

The owner of a 2009 black Jeep Grand Cherokee on Tantalus Road called the Squamish RCMP to report the theft from his vehicle sometime between 8 p.m. on Aug. 9 and 10 a.m. the next morning. Approximately $20 dollars in change was stolen from the console, as well a silver 128 GB iPod from the glove box.  The name “SLOAN” and a phone number was engraved on the back of the electronic device. The owner admitted to leaving the doors unlocked.

Excessive speeding

A Squamish officer was conducting laser enforcement on Highway 99 at Depot Road and reported a BMW 745i travelling 132 km/h in the clearly posted 80 km/h zone. The driver was issued an excessive speeding ticket and fined $368 dollars.  Excessive speed is considered 41 kilometres over the posted speed limit. Along with the fine, there is a mandatory seven-day vehicle impoundment. The driver also received three points from ICBC.

Vehicle window smashed

The registered owner called the police to report that someone smashed his windshield when his blue 2004 Volkswagen Jetta was parked in the 31800-block of Westway Avenue on Aug. 10. The damage was likely caused by a bat or a rock. File remains under investigation.

Suspicious rafts

A concerned Squamish resident called the RCMP on Aug. 13 to report a suspicious raft with one person on it floating down the Stawamas River. The caller did not describe the raft but went on to say that after seeing the first raft, they observed another raft floating 15 minutes later down the river without anyone on it. There were no other callers on this, and no one called to report they were in distress on the river.

GoPro stolen

The owner of a green 2004 Ford Escape called the Squamish RCMP on Aug. 13 to report a theft from his or her vehicle. The vehicle was parked near Alice Lake while the owner was going mountain biking. At 3 p.m., the owner returned to find someone smashed out the driver side rear passenger window with a rock. A Windows Tablet, GoPro, two backpacks containing clothes and around $200 dollars were taken.

Skateboard stolen

Someone stole a skateboard from the Canadian Tire parking lot on Mamquam Road on Aug. 13. The fish-shaped skateboard is blue and red with yellow wheels. It also has the inscription “Empire” in white on the underside and has Goldwing chugs.
