Police seek help after second-hand store break-in

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

Squamish RCMP issued an unusual plea for help in their investigation of a break-in at a second-hand store that occurred last week in downtown Squamish.

On Wednesday (May 11), police received a report that someone had kicked in a rear door at Pearl's 2nds and broke into the store overnight, RCMP Staff Sgt. Guy Pollock said in a statement.

Pollock did not say whether any items had been taken, but he appealed to citizens' sense of community in asking for help in solving the crime.

"Pearl's 2nds is a place where items are sold at a discounted price to assist those in the community who need them the most," he wrote. "The suspects who are breaking into this store are only taking from the families who could benefit from them."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to phone the Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477).

Dirt bike stolen

Police are also investigating the theft of a motorcycle valued at $6,000 from the locked common storage room of a townhome complex on Tantalus Road.

In the incident, which was reported to police on Monday (May 16), a pry bar was used to gain entry to the storage room and an orange-and-black KTM XC250 dirt bike was stolen. Police are asking for the public's help with their investigation.

Break-in suspects nabbed

Three men were arrested this week after allegedly trying to break into a home on Perth Drive in Garibaldi Highlands.

On Monday at 11:54 p.m., police received a report that three males were trying to enter the home through a window. The witness and complainant shouted at the three, who fled on foot, Pollock said.

The males were described as all being under 6 feet tall and wearing hooded sweaters. An RCMP Police Dog Services team was brought to the scene, and one of the suspects was tracked down and arrested. He sustained "minor bite injuries" on his right arm and left leg in the process of being arrested and was treated at Squamish General Hospital, Pollock said.

The other two suspects were later arrested while returning to their vehicle. The three, who face charges of break and enter and trespass by night, were released on a promise to appear in North Vancouver Provincial Court.

Driver faces charges

The driver of a red Chevy Cavalier that was seen weaving in its lane along Highway 99 near Britannia Beach on Friday (May 13) is facing charges of impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level over .08.

Police, responding to a complaint about erratic driving, set up a road block to stop the vehicle, Pollock said. The suspect vehicle drove through the road block without stopping. RCMP members, though, continued patrolling for the vehicle and finally located it at Mamquam Road and Highway 99 in Squamish.

A police officer who saw the vehicle turn onto Mamquam Road stopped the vehicle. He then identified the driver and arrested the male for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. After being taken to the detachment, the driver provided breath samples that were almost double the legal limit of .08, Pollock said.

The man was charged with impaired driving and driving over .08 and was release on a promise to appear in court.
