Squamish SAR find missing boarder on Cypress

Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR) members discovered the body of a 22-year old snowboarder missing on North Vancouver's Cypress Mountain since Sunday (Jan. 8).

Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR) members discovered the body of a 22-year old snowboarder missing on North Vancouver's Cypress Mountain since Sunday (Jan. 8).

Chris Lawrence, Hugh Ackroyd and Doug Woods were the first SAR team to arrive to the rescue command post in the early morning Tuesday (Jan. 10).

The team was dispatched to the treacherous Tony Baker Gully, known as the "hell hole".

By Tuesday morning, a break in the weather allowed Jones to dispatch the Squamish team by helicopter onto the ground to search the gully.

"It's not a straight forward area. Chris is a very accomplished mountaineer and he found it very difficult," said Jones. "They got there shortly before 2 p.m. Conditions were marginal to move in but they were safe and we lucked right out. Hugh spotted what he thought was a jacket in the snow and that's all that was exposed.

Epp and a friend had been snowboarding out of bounds.

Ted Jones of North Shore Rescue said that North Shore rescue and Squamish SAR rely on each other to help out with difficult rescue efforts.

"The guys did a great job," he said.
