Suspicious death in Cheakamus River

The RCMP is calling the death of a woman who was killed in the Cheakamus River a suspicious death.

Cpl. Dave Ritchie said police were called at approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday (July 27) after a body was discovered floating in the river in the Cheakamus Canyon area.

"Members of the Integrated Homicide Unit have been called in to assist with the investigation," Ritchie said.

The body was recovered about 27 km north of Squamish.

Ritchie said search and rescue volunteers with the Squamish Emergency Program recovered the body. The rescuers needed the assistance of a helicopter to retrieve the body.

The RCMP released few details the morning after the incident. As of The Chief's press deadline, the Police had not revealed the name, age or hometown of the deceased woman.

The RCMP is asking for help from anyone who was in the area of the Cheakamus Canyon on Wednesday in the afternoon or early evening to call the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100.
