Two separate incidents of vandalism at Brackendale Elementary will cost $10,000 to fix, said school district secretary treasurer Nancy Edwards. But, she said, the district does not perceive the incidents as a trend toward increasing vandalism.
On July 14, vandals broke windows at the school, eluding security guards the district hired to patrol the grounds. The school suffered more window breaking on July 24, less than two weeks later, racking up the bill for repair to $10,000. With insurance coverage, the school district will have to foot half of the bill.
"We pay the $2,500 deductible every time," said Edwards.
The damage is thought to be the cause of "isolated incidents," said Edwards who added vandalism has decreased in the last few years, thanks to a few new prevention methods.
"We haven't had the same window breakage we had a few years ago," she said.
Those measures include new metal blinds that cover windows when school is not in session and the hiring of guards to patrol school grounds.
The second incident of vandalism led police to apprehend suspects, and an investigation is underway, according to Edwards.Police reported school windows were broken this week at Brackendale Elementary School and at Don Ross Secondary.
