Squamish RCMP this week arrested a man who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant on "a multitude of charges" from Quebec.
Christopher Cullum Roy, 23, whom police believe had been living in Squamish "for a number of weeks," was nabbed on Sunday (Feb. 17) at 6:30 p.m. in the 38000 block of Westway Avenue in Valleycliffe in response to a report of some suspicious people in the area, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement.
In addition to violation of conditions of his parole, Roy is facing a drug-possession charge in relation to the discovery of "a quantity of drugs" believed to be ecstasy that were found in his possession at the time of the arrest, Pride said.
In Quebec, Roy faces charges for drug- and property-related offences, and for breaching "numerous" conditions of his parole, Pride said. Squamish RCMP received a tip from Quebec authorities that he was in town and had been looking for him for some time, Pride said.
"It appears that numerous people had been allowing him to reside locally and avoid us. Unfortunately, those same people were notforthcoming or honest with our officers who had been looking for him over the past few weeks," he wrote.
Police almost had Roy in custody on Saturday (Feb. 16) during a routine check at a bar in the 37000 block of Cleveland Avenue. After noticing that "an associate" of Roy was inside the bar, they located Roy in the area; however, fled the scene when police tried to speak to him, Pride said.
Thefts continue
Police reported at least four more incidents involving the theft of items from inside parked vehicles during the past week.
The most serious incident was reported to police on Sunday. A Ford F150 that had been left unlocked overnight while parked in the backyard of a home in the 38000 block of Harbour View Place was targeted. Some power tools and a laptop computer with a total value of around $3,000 were stolen. A neighbour reported having seen a suspicious male in the area at around 2:15 a.m. The suspect was described as 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet, 10 inches tall, slender, wearing dark clothing with a bandana, shorts and red sneakers. The male was seen lurking around some vehicles but had nothing in his possession at the time of the sighting, Pride said.
Last Wednesday (Feb. 13), police received a report of a theft from a vehicle parked in an underground parkade of a complex in the 1200 block of Village Green Way. The theft actually occurred on Feb. 7 between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. The vehicle had not been locked. Stolen were a GPS, and iPod, sunglasses, an air compressor and some tools.
Another vehicle was entered on Feb. 13 while parked in the Shannon Falls parking lot between 4:20 and 4:30 p.m. A window was broken and a brown leather bag containing some clothing was stolen.
On Friday (Feb. 15), police received a report of a truck having been broken into overnight while parked in the 1400 block of Pemberton Avenue. A rear window was smashed. Some spare change and a pair of Merrell binoculars valued at around $300 were stolen.
Trailer taken
On Thursday (Feb. 14), police received a report of a utility trailer having been stolen sometime that day from a lot in the 1000 block of Jay Crescent. The trailer is 16 to 18 feet long, with two-foot-high side walls and a four-foot-high rear ram. A toolbox was also in the trailer, which is valued at around $3,000.
