Axemen battle Bayside RFC to a draw

Sea to Sky rugby players rallied hard after finding themselves on the backfoot

The Axemen battled the Bayside RFC from South Surrey on Oct. 2 to a 17-17 draw.

The game, which pitted Sea to Sky players against South Surrey, marks the end of their pre-season series of matches this past weekend at Brennan Park, reads a news release from the team.

Locals played a three "halves" match against Surrey, with both sides fielding a 2nd XV and first XV selection in each of the first two periods and a mixed team for a final run out at the end of the game.

“The Axemen started slowly and found themselves on the backfoot and behind on the scoreboard, defending against big carries from Bayside, but found their way into the game and with confidence growing, the team played positive, attacking rugby to great effect,” reads the release.

Assistant coaches Steve List and Peter Stevenson said In the release they were delighted to see the players come together as a group and put in a huge effort, working hard in defence and supporting each other on the field.

List said after the game that it was great for the Axemen to field two teams despite missing a number of players through injury and unavailability. It was a good sign of the continued growth in numbers and the positive atmosphere at the club

Stevenson had similar sentiments.

“Given the circumstances and missing key players, it would have been very easy for negativity to have crept into the team,” he said. “It was brilliant to see how everyone, to a man, stepped up to the challenge and achieved a positive outcome. A lesson which will undoubtedly serve the club well in the future."

The club is now looking forward to Oct. 16 and a run of four weekends of home games to kick off the fall season in the BCRU leagues, with the Axemen fielding teams in the 2nd and 3rd Division for the Fall schedule.
