MONTREAL — Canadian courts need to be more transparent in order to maintain public faith in the justice system, the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Canada said Thursday ahead of a rare sitting outside of Ottawa.

JAMES SMITH CREE NATION — Ten people were killed in a series of stabbings on the James Smith Cree Nation and in the nearby community of Weldon, northeast of Saskatoon, on Sunday. Police say 18 others were injured.

JASPER NATIONAL PARK — The mayor of Jasper, Alta., is asking visitors to stay away from the town and national park as a nearby wildfire is expected to grow and crews work to restore power.

OTTAWA — Queen Elizabeth II has been a constant presence in Canadians' lives. Her face is engraved on our coins. It graces the $20 bill and is featured on some of our stamps. Even buildings, parks, mountains and islands bear her name.

Until her death on Sept. 8, the Queen was the longest-reigning monarch in British history. She also served as Canada's official head of state, a role in which she was supported by the Governor General.

She visited Canada no less than 31 times since her coronation in June 1952.
