COUNCIL CUT: Council’s wishlist

Councillors starting to draft possible motions for LMLGA, and, possibly, down the road, the UBCM

Search and rescue, BC Assessment values, fossil fuels, e-bikes, resource roads and BCR properties were all items Squamish councillors are considering for the Lower Mainland Local Government Association conference.

While the conference is in May, councillors who wish to put forth a resolution at the conference need to get the ball rolling this month.

Should their resolutions pass at the LMLGA, they’ll go on the Union of BC Municipalities conference.

If they pass at that event, they’d have the highest chance of being recognized by the province.

UBCM resolutions are one of the sharpest lobbying tools used by local governments to get change done at the provincial level.

Coun. Jenna Stoner said she’ll be drafting a resolution to address inconsistent provincial funding for search and rescue.

Mayor Karen Elliott said she wanted to tackle BC Assessment values that could take small businesses out of the game.

Coun. Chris Pettingill expressed interest in providing transitional funding to northeastern B.C. communities to ease them off a fossil fuel economy.

Coun. Eric Andersen wanted to craft a resolution that would address who takes care of resource roads and BCR properties.

Coun. Armand Hurford suggested addressing taxes on e-bikes, which he said are still taxed at full rates while normal bikes are exempt from provincial tax.

Giving e-bikes the exemption would help stimulate active transportation, he said.

However, Hurford recused himself from actually drafting the resolution, as he owns Republic Bicycles. He offered to inform anyone interested in taking up the cause.

Coun. John French volunteered to work on it.
