No new COVID-19 deaths over long weekend in B.C., despite increase in cases

The provincial government has announced a total of 146 new cases of COVID-19 over the long weekend, according to provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry’s latest daily update. There have been no new deaths.

The provincial government has announced a total of 146 new cases of COVID-19 over the long weekend, according to provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry’s latest daily update.

There have been no new deaths.

“There have been a number of new cases over the weekend,” said Henry. “This was not unexpected; we knew that events that occurred in the previous couple of weeks would lead to more people who have been exposed, developing illness.”

Many of the new cases are related to private gatherings, small parties and travel, according to Henry. There has also been some workplace transmission between coworkers.

There are now 74 cases related to Fraser Valley Packers Inc. There are no public health concerns related to the consumption of fruit.

There is a new healthcare outbreak, this time at Maple Ridge Seniors Village assisted living facility, where there is a single staff case, according to  Henry. The outbreak at Mission Memorial hospital has now been declared over, leaving three active outbreaks in the province.

British Columbia’s COVID-19 statistics on Tuesday August 4, are:

  • 43 new cases on Saturday, August 1
  • 29 new cases on Sunday, August 2
  • 46 new cases on Monday, August 3
  • 28 new cases on Tuesday August 4

In total, there have been 3,787 total cases in B.C. Of those, 319 are still active. Another 3,273 have recovered and 195 have died.

Cases by health region and/or location:

  • 1,119 cases in Vancouver Coastal Health 
  • 1,989 cases in Fraser Heath 
  • 146 cases in Vancouver Island Health
  • 377 cases in Interior Health
  • 91 cases in Northern Health 
  • 65 cases outside of Canada

Current cases in hospital or health-care settings:

  • 8 acute care hospitals cases
  • 4 ICU cases
  • 3 active outbreaks, one in long-term care and two in acute care
