They say adversity is the best test of true character. The response to the recent dramatic turn of events at the Sea to Sky Gondola has accentuated that proverb in spades.

What does it mean to consult someone in a crucial decision? This is an important question that has a profound impact on our private day-to-day lives, as well as in the broader sphere of public discourse.

I am writing from my couch where I am lying debilitated and in pain. I have a severely swollen ankle/mid-calf from an injury caused by an encounter with an off-leash dog that occurred within one of the on-leash trails near Squamish Golf Course.

I don’t know why they did it. I don’t know when or if they’ll be caught. I don’t know if ‘they’ is a he or she or actually a ‘they.’ I do know that speculation in a situation like this is both perfectly natural if not irresistible at times.

As a millwright, I am surprised that the perp (he/she/they) isn’t currently food for the bears. As any logger, sailor, millwright knows the forces released by a catastrophic wire rope failure are dangerous to life and limb.

To the Sea To Sky Gondola Staff, You all are a big part of our community, and an important part! Our son Tashi has been riding your gondola since he was just a couple of months old! He is now three.

The Sea to Sky Gondola is deeply loved by Squamish and we were all devastated to hear of the closure. When the gondola first opened, we knew it would be an amazing boost to tourism, offering everyone access to the top of the world.
