it’s customary at this time of year to reflect upon things that have happened in the past 12 months and look forward to what the next while may bring to us.

Every year, as we take the calendar down from the wall and pin up a new one, it seems the perfect time to reflect on where we have been – and where we are going.

After reading the article “queering art on display at Quest” (Dec. 17), about the display at Quest University, I’m still left wondering why art needs to have a label that reflects a gender.

Re: “Squamish transforming to a tourist town” (Dec. 10). We need to be better at presenting our local history. Squamish economic geography and contributions of our traditional industries, including tourism, could use some attention too.

At the beginning of a new year it’s always important to try and start it off on a positive note. I like to do this by stopping for a moment to appreciate and give thanks for the everyday things that we here in Squamish might take for granted.

As with many people, my first experience with Squamish was when I briefly stopped here for gas while on my way from Vancouver to Whistler. Back then, there was no other reason to stop here.

With the flurry of shopping activity and expensive outings such as skiing at Christmas, it’s difficult not to think about money.

During this season of giving and receiving, we should not hesitate to acknowledge some people who have made a lasting contribution to our community.
