Letter: Kudos to Squamish's Nicola Keate

My best wishes to those who are addicted, and my deepest admiration to those who have chosen not to start. Stay strong.

Nicola Keate.

Kudos to Nicola Keate [“Recovery from addiction is possible,” published Aug. 18]]for beating the monster that is drug addiction.

It saddens me to hear of the numerous deaths due to drug overdoses and the family and friends that must deal with their loved one’s passing.

Nicola is correct in saying that early education is key. As shocking as it may seem, I believe children should be given an informed presentation about drugs (from former addicts) and the propensity for addiction. Also, they should be shown images of and interviews with addicts to appreciate how these drugs have impacted their lives. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Yes, I know about peer pressure, but when all is said and done, it is up to the individual to make the decision not to take that first step.

Please, Just Say No. I am guessing that, secretly, your peers will admire you for taking that stand. There is help out there. Be the one who never has to seek it.

You have been given the remarkable gift of life. Make plans, dream big, but ensure you are around to fulfill them.

My best wishes to those who are addicted, and my deepest admiration to those who have chosen not to start. Stay strong.
