Poll: Here's what Squamish respondents said about changing B.C.'s name

Almost 70% of local survey respondents said it is a 'bad' or 'very bad' idea to consider changing the name of British Columbia.

The Squamish Chief polled 568 readers and asked the question: What do you think of the idea of changing the name of British Columbia?

Earlier this month, Research Co. published survey results that showed 61% of survey respondents of First Nations origins and 50% among the province's residents aged 18 to 34 supported switching the province’s name to one that acknowledges Indigenous heritage. 

Overall, however,  53% of the respondents disagreed with changing the name. 

The Squamish Chief poll ran from 11/7/2022 to 11/26/2022. Of the 568 votes, we can determine that 256 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Very good idea 10.94 % local, 10.56 % total    
Good idea 5.47 % local, 7.04 % total    
Bad idea 26.95 % local, 26.58 % total    
Very bad idea 43.36 % local, 45.77 % total    
Not sure 13.28 % local, 10.04 % total

Results are based on an online study of adult Squamish Chief readers that are located in Squamish. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 4.05%, 19 times out of 20.
