Hi my name is Kevin Jewell and I am running in the upcoming election. My decision to run for council is motivated both by my respect for this community, and a desire to contribute to make Squamish an even better place to live and raise a family. Squamish needs a strong vision that defines what we stand for as a community, and what matters most to us as citizens. Specifically, how can we work together to achieve a stronger community spirit, which encompasses our goals. Like many of you, I am experiencing the same challenges facing most families, which makes me determined to control municipal taxes and spending, to ensure that citizens receive the best value for every tax dollar. If elected, I would prioritize the needs of Squamish to embrace diversification, while maintaining the essential fabric of life here in the community. Let me explain what I mean by prioritizing Squamish.

Prioritizing Squamish is about setting achievable goals for the community which encompass diversification and growth opportunities, while maintaining a focus of fiscal responsibilities towards the citizens of Squamish. Part of this means examining our existing operations, services, and facilities, and coming to realize new opportunities for community growth. In particular, Squamish needs to embrace diversification while maintaining the essential fabric of life here in the community. This does not mean that we should plan for big changes overnight, but we need to evaluate our options and be open minded when such opportunities arise.

The fact is this is a great community with great potential to prosper. It is up to all of us to come up with a consensus plan as to how we can best accommodate this growth and build on our already strong spirit. Specifically, job creation and economic diversification are high priorities for our community. Tourism and logging are an essential part of this process, but it would be great if we could build an information economy along the way that can help support and enhance the way of life here in Squamish. It is possible and we can make this a reality if we work together.

Finally, Squamish needs to elect a strong municipal government that is capable of taking on these priorities and responsibilities, and also be transparent with the process of governance. If I am elected, I expect to work strategically with other members of council to organize and build upon these goals. Importantly, this community needs to establish a fiscal plan that takes into account the needs of our citizens. By promoting a diversified economy, we can achieve our growth potential in a sustainable way with respect to all of these important priorities.

I welcome the opportunity to work with council on these issues, and I would ask for your support on November 15th. Please know that you can Count On Kevin to listen and deliver a strong voice to council with respect to your opinions. Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions.
