All things aquatic celebrated next week

National Drowning Prevention Week is being observed from Sunday (July 19) to Saturday, July 25. There are week-long celebrations each day at the Brennan Park Aquatic Centre with special demonstrations, games, skill development, prizes and fun each day from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Start the week off with a Toonie swim with the "Swim to Survive" challenge on Sunday (July 19). Family Swim Times at the Aquatic Centre are Sundays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Check the full pool schedule at the website at: www.squamish.ca.

A seniors' yard sale will be held tomorrow (July 18) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (rain or shine) at the Squamish Manor at 38209 Third Avenue. There will be a good variety of crafts, jewelry, knitted socks, puzzles and more.

Two hilarious one-act plays by Kenneth Grey will be performed at the Brackendale Art Gallery tomorrow evening (July 18) at 8 p.m. Ladies in Waiting stars Nicole Busby and Trisha Cundy, and Lindsey Agnell and Jacob Blair perform in Window Gazing. On Wednesday (July 22) at 8 p.m., Del Barber takes to the stage with guitar vocals, harmonica, mandolin and banjo. Tickets are $10 each and available at the Gallery and The Bookshelf.

The WOW Riders will meet at 9 a.m. at Canadian Tire on Monday (July 20) for a ride to the fish hatchery. For those who do not know where that is, it is beyond the North Vancouver Outdoor School. For more information, please give Shirley a call at 604-898-5715.

On Wednesday (July 22) the Easy Riders will meet at Canadian Tire at 9 a.m. for a ride through Brackendale and along part of Ray's Trail. For more info, call Shirley at 604-898-5715.

Many families and individuals in this community depend on the Squamish Food Bank each month. A fundraiser now underway is the Christmas in July raffle and thanks to the generosity of many of our local businesses there are some great prizes to be won. These include an $800 gift basket for a woman, gift certificates for clothing and restaurant vouchers, family game packs, pet basket as well as baskets for women and men. Volunteers from the Food Bank will be selling tickets each weekend at Save-On-Foods and the draw will be held at 1 p.m. on July 31 at Save-On-Foods. While shopping, please consider dropping off a food donation at Save-On-Foods, Nester's Food Market or Extra Foods.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at Government and Ross Road on Tuesday (July 21) at 9 a.m. for a Brohm Ridge hike. Newcomers are asked to wear boots, carry water and something to eat and to be prepared to be on the hikes from three to five hours. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

When purchasing gifts this summer please consider checking out the many and interesting items on display at the Gift Shop at the hospital. It is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is run by the Women's Auxiliary to the Squamish General Hospital. All proceeds go towards purchasing medical equipment for the hospital that in turn benefits the whole community. There is also a fine selection of clothing for babies and toddlers.

Next Friday (July 24) is the last day to reserve a seat on the bus for the trip to the Edgewater Casino in Vancouver on July 30 and sponsored by Squamish Branch No. 70 Senior Citizens of British Columbia. Please call Elaine at 604-898-5463.

The monthly draw for the Rotary 200 Club was held on July 9 in the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company. The winners were: Jodi Escott ($100), Bill McNeney ($120), Neil Boyd ($130) and Denise Imbeau ($150).
