It's looking like it will be a long winter for NHL fans. The league and the NHLPA aren't really talking, the first few weeks of the season have been cancelled and even the Florida Panthers mascot - "Stanley C. Panther" - was given a pink slip.

An event not to be missed each year is the annual Hilltop House Harvest Tea that also includes a sale of homemade baked goods and raffle. It will be held at Hilltop House (HTH) in the dining room on Saturday (Oct. 13) from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

If Sea to Sky Corridor leaders and their counterparts at B.C. Transit ever needed a kick-start to their efforts to implement publicly run, intercity transit in the corridor, this would certainly qualify.

EDITOR, On Sept. 24, local MP John Weston passed a new fitness bill that encourages local governments across Canada to open sports facilities for free public access on the first Saturday of June each year.

This past week I was in Victoria with council to attend the annual convention of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. The first full day was the second Mayors' Caucus, to take advantage of the mayors already being in town for the UBCM.

EDITOR, Re. "A joint effort on marijuana," Just a Thought, Chief, Sept. 27. The vote by B.C. municipal leaders to decriminalize marijuana is a step in the right direction.

Over the years I've heard many people express their frustration at not being able to communicate assertively.

EDITOR, Re. "Column missed the mark," Letters, Chief, Sept. 27. William Barnes needs to bone up on the history of conflict in the Middle East, and perhaps in some basic humanity.

I remember when, in about Grade 7, I discovered that math textbooks had the answers in the back. What a momentous mistake by the publishers, I thought.
