The Squamish Chief polled 395 readers and asked the question: Do you think the Squamish Estuary should be closed to people each fall to protect the bears within it?

The Squamish Estuary recently reopened.

Portions of the popular trail network were closed a few weeks ago after two separate bear attacks on pedestrians. These attacks, which both occurred on Nov. 3, were believed to be the result of a mother bear and yearling being unintentionally startled by people passing through a trail.

The reader poll ran from 11/11/2022 to 11/25/2022. Of the 395 votes, we can determine that 183 are from within the community. The full results are as follows:

Yes 77.60 % local, 70.63 % total
No 22.40 % local, 29.37 % total
  Local   Total

Results are based on an online study of adult Squamish Chief readers that are located in Squamish. The margin of error - which measures sample variability - is +/- 4.88%, 19 times out of 20.

The Squamish Chief uses a variety of techniques to capture data, detect and prevent fraudulent votes, detect and prevent robots, and filter out non-local and duplicate votes.
