Squamish may be just a little too focused on sunshine lately.

Over the years, the need for increased accountability up and down the chain of command at the District of Squamish has been a frequent discussion topic, and it certainly was front and centre during last fall’s civic election campaign.

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, we made history in Squamish. Our council voted unanimously to meet the final conditions to become the next Canadian Solar City (No. 5).

I have been going through a difficult time in my life, but growing up and living in a small community like Squamish has been such an asset. I have had three different incidents where this was shown.

You would expect that a small group of people meeting regularly to ensure people get the help they need are paid employees of a government-funded agency.

Looking for a real dialogue? The news last week about the provincial ministers’ rubber-stamping of Woodfibre LNG to please their boss in Victoria is not acceptable.

I was watching Shaw the other night and watched an interview with the mayor. We are paying for another Official Community Plan (OCP). The first one was done for the purpose of receiving funds for the diking system.

If I were to take a can of paint and start painting trees in the district parks, I would probably be stopped and charged with vandalism, mischief, damage to public property, or, if the feds got interested, some form of eco-terrorism.

I went to the Eagle Run dike this morning for a walk and was delighted to find it had recently been resurfaced with fine gravel. This made walking easier and meant I could look up, rather than at my feet.

It took the District of Squamish many years of hard work to become a designated “Bear Smart “ community, but it only took a few months to become “Bear Stupid,” thanks to the new food scrap recycling program that was started a while ago.
